When do companies use IIOT

Please read the three bullets in my post, What is IIOT, to level set.  If you basically agree on my definition(s) of IIOT then get ready to disagree this post.  I think all large industrial companies should be preparing to incorporate IIOT into their business. I also think companies should be moving to the kind of IIOT where equipment will be smart with an interim step that enables edge.  I think the future of the industry will be a mix of these technologies, especially in the more hazardous industries. I do not really get into block chain in my blog, but I think this will all be part of the landscape.

What are the different IIOT definitions?

Simply, these technologies are not being developed in a monolith.  There are many players, which will result in new technologies being simultaneously released by different vendors.  For example:

  1. Equipment manufacturers will develop their own smart equipment,
  2. Third party engineering companies can develop edge computing strategies to optimize specific devices,
  3. A variety of unexpected vendors will develop IIOT platforms.

To add to this there is no single platform.  Due to the complexity and vast room for domain specialization, it is likely that companies will need more than one IIOT platform in the future.
